Sculpture and Ceramics Courses and Workshops in a Studio in Letná, Prague

Since 2025, alongside the activities of our Restoration and Sculpture Studio Valžán in Bratronice, I have also been running a sculpture and ceramics studio in Letná, Prague. Here, I focus on my own independent artistic practice and experiments with various sculptural techniques. I combine my knowledge of ceramics and sculpture while searching for a personal path of artistic expression.

In the studio, I regularly organize courses and workshops for children and adults—whether you simply want to try working with clay, experiment with different materials, or pursue sculpture in a more systematic way.

During my studies, I often wished for a more open and kind environment, where the joy of creation would be just as important as craftsmanship. This is exactly the atmosphere I aim to bring into my courses, with an emphasis on an individual approach, freedom of expression, and discovering the possibilities of the material.

Every Tuesday in the early evening, I open my studio to the public. Below you will find an overview of the available options, dates, and prices. Courses are held in small groups of 6–9 participants to ensure sufficient space and an individual approach.

All courses are taught by me, Klára Žán (Klára Žán Valentová). I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where I studied in the Sculpture Restoration Studio. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in the History of Christian Art from the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University, as well as professional artistic training in ceramics and porcelain from the Václav Hollar School.

I gained professional experience during internships in Italy and the United Kingdom, including at the prestigious Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. I hold a license from the Czech Ministry of Culture for the restoration of sculptural artworks made of ceramics, terracotta, stone, and other materials. I also work as a lecturer at UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague) in the KRUD studio (Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art).

KILN-FIRED SCULPTURE: CERAMICS WORKSHOP

Would you like to try working with clay but don’t know where to start?
The three-hour ceramic workshop is open to everyone, including complete beginners.

During the three hours, I will guide you through the entire modeling process and help you create an original ceramic piece—a mug, bowl, vase, or a small sculpture.

To make the most of your time in the studio, it is recommended to think in advance about what you would like to create and, if you wish, send me a sketch or an inspiration photo. For more complex projects, I can prepare simple supporting structures in advance for your specific idea.

What can you expect?

  • You will learn the basic techniques of working with clay.

  • At your own pace, you will create one or more original pieces.

  • You can add color to your finished piece using slips, or return for another workshop to glaze it.
    The pieces need to dry for at least 10 days before firing in the ceramic kiln.

Adults and youth aged 13 and over. No prior experience required.

Instruction is available in Czech, English, and Italian.

  • guidance from an experienced instructor

  • the opportunity to create in an inspiring sculpture studio environment

  • light refreshments (coffee, tea, nuts)

SCULPTURE AND CERAMICS COURSE FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH (13+)

This course is designed for those who enjoy working with clay and would like to create, experiment, and develop their skills on a regular basis. The course allows you to focus on functional ceramics as well as to study sculpture from the basics: modeling from a live or static model, from photographs (natural objects, animal or human body fragments), or from your own imagination. You can choose to work with ceramic clay (fired in a kiln) or sculptural clay (for molding and casting). At the end, you will also create a color or monochrome surface finish using slips, glazes, or shellac and pigments. The course is also suitable as preparation for entrance exams to art schools.

To make the most of your time in the studio, it is recommended to think in advance about what you would like to create and, if you wish, send me a sketch or an inspiration photo. For more complex projects, I can prepare simple supporting structures in advance for your specific idea.

OPEN STUDIO – SCULPTURE & CERAMICS

After completing the six-week sculpture and ceramics course, participants who are able and willing to work independently are offered the opportunity to use the studio facilities and equipment for their own sculptural and ceramic projects within the Open Studio program.

PRIVATE GROUP WORKSHOPS

Would you like to enjoy a creative evening just with your group of friends, your family with children, or are you looking for an original teambuilding activity for colleagues?
I will prepare a tailor-made workshop for you – in the inspiring environment of the studio and with the full facilities of a professional ceramics workshop.
